Slave tag |
| Slave tags or badges are an amazing part of an unfortunate time in our nations history. They were used to tax people who wanted to lease or rent their slaves out for profit. Reading interviews with ex-slaves, they were actually a prized possession, one gentleman was quoted "That was as close to being free as you could be." |

Slave tags are an unfortunate but interesting part of our history. The function of these were to reduce the amount of low wage/no wage labor which was driving the wages down in Charleston. |

What an interesting part of history. These tags were originally sold by the city of Charleston for $1 so that a slave owner could rent or lease his slave during the year. |
