Although the 1856 was really the first small cent in American history, 1857 is the first year with a cost within the reach of normal collectors. It was the first official small cent, since the 1856 was only produced for specimens and examples for law makers.
Large cents were still made this year. However, they were becoming increasingly unpopular due to their size. It costs the mint $1.06 to produce 100 large cents.
Flying eagles had a composition of 88% copper and 12% nickel.
1857 Mintage 17,450,000
No wear. Full mint luster. Minimal wear. Some mint luster remains. Minor wear. Some mint luster may remain. Still great design devices. The high end of a mid-grade coin. Spent several months in circulation. Mid grade coin. Nice example. May have some detracting features. Significant wear, but all devices are recognizable. Not a bad coin at all. We like to say these coins served their country well! hehe This coin has been around the block a time or two! Imagine the stories it could tell. Barely recognizable.
